Available Website Placements - Where do I find a list?

This question is not answered

Hi All -

Does anyone know where to find a list of available website placements?

I'm trying to run a site-targeted campaign (separate from my keyword traffic) but can't find a list of sites to choose from.

  • When I get to the "Add placements to:" page, I clicked on the "placement reporting tool", which is supposed to generate a list of content sites.
  • The report ran, but I only got 4 results.
  • I entered the results in the box, and click "View available placements" and get an error message saying "One or more of the websites you entered are not part of the Microsoft content network. Placements are available on the content network only"

I'm not exactly sure why this is happening.

  • The campaign is set up as "Site Targeted".
  • My ad group status is Active.
  • My Default content bid is set at $1.00 (not too low to exclude sites)

Am I doing something wrong?

If I'm doing the right thing, the only explanation that makes sense  is that MSN (Live / Bing or whoever) is crawling the landing page (or website) of my ad and is choosing content sites for me. But if that's the case, the list should be much longer. I'm advertising a reputable education site with hundreds of content rich pages (most of which have a page rank of at least 3).

If there's a page somewhere that has all available placements listed (like in Google AdWords), I'm not able to find it. Ideally, I'd like to put in a few of my most important keywords and generate a list of sites. Does anyone know if that is possible? And fi so, how??

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

  • I wanted to bump this question which I found while searching the exact same question...

Where do I find a list of sites on the AC content network, that I could use for site placements or exclusions?

Obviously I can run the Publisher Performace report, but that'll only tell me what sites my ads have already run on.. . where can I find a list of the rest of the sites on the content network?

  • Hello zibbieone,

Thank you for your post inquiring about website placement.

Currently there is no list available due to Bing always updating new websites to have ads placed on. I will try and look into finding someone results for you.

However, without details of your account i cannot determine why you are only seeing 4 results.

Paul I'm having a problem where no matter what I do in setting up a placement campaign, MSN refuses to allow me to progress in setting it up.  I'll run a placement report, see all my content network sites that I have been advertising on and want to target specifically - then when I add them to the box on the add placement screen, it refuses to accept them, and just goes yellow. The box is highlighted yellow.  There is no way to proceed.

And as you say, there is no way to see a list of available placements.  Which I find odd since Google AdWords does give you a list.

How can I proceed in setting up a placements campaign when the very placements the MSN Placement report gives me from my past advertising history, the placement campaign itself refuses to accept and gives me no reason except for turning yellow.

  • Hello Andy7744,

  • Just to confirm one part of this question:

We cannot get a list of existing placements, and we never will.  The question kind of doesn't make sense at a macro level.  This is similar to asking if you can get a list of all of the keywords available.  We have no idea what someone is going to search for next, or what page (placement) a publisher is going to add next.

There are certainly tools available for helping with the most popular ones.  And you are on the right path by trying out the placements report to go find targeted sites (very similar to running a search query report).

As to your specific question about the 4 sites you are having trouble with - let's leave that to the adCenter folks.

  •

You are misunderstanding what I am saying.  Even MSN and Adwords provide a list of suggested Keywords to use.  So you can start bidding on those kind of suggestions.  Im not asking for a full list of available placements.  Im asking for ANY available placements - and those are not provided.  And as I said, I tried putting in placements from my own placement report that I ran, and AdCenter errors out when trying to continue.  When creating a placement campaign, the box itself just goes yellow when I try and proceed.

I saw that an MSN rep just replied to my case, so I will work with him directly.  But wanted to further explain to you cause that I was you are thinking this isn't making sense on a macro level as you say.

  • Hello Andy7744,

I apologize for my misunderstanding. For a list of suggested Keywords to use, please download the Microsoft Ad Inteligence Tool here -

Please let me know if you have any quesiton on the MAI tool.

  • Im not looking at all for keywords. I know that is available. I was suggesting how a list of any possible PLACEMENTS - similiar to the way keywords are suggested would be great.

I still cannot create placement campaigns.  It says EVERY SINGLE ONE of the placements I put in - and these are ALL PLACEMENTS I got from the MSN placement report itself - are not part of the placement network.

    Content Ads Information

    • Content Ads are text ads that are displayed on a variety of websites, due either to relevant keyword or site bids.
    • When you submit Content Ads in the U.S., Microsoft distributes them on our content network of Microsoft and Yahoo! sites, as well as third-party websites.
      • Microsoft has partnerships with several third-party websites and networks. When Microsoft distributes content ads to third-party sites, those ads are considered syndicated. Such partner deals boost our network – which gives you the opportunity to reach more customers.
    • As with any Microsoft Advertising adCenter campaign, the volume you experience will vary depending on keyword selection, site targeting, site exclusion, click-through rate, and fluctuating inventory.

    Content vs. Search Ad Distribution

All ad groups are initially set to be distributed on both search and content sites on the Microsoft digital network; however, you can select whether to have your ads distributed on search pages, on content pages, or both. These controls are located on the Ad Group Settings tab under Advanced Options. You can modify your ad group distribution in three ways:

    • Content-only: Distribute only on content pages
    • Search-only: Distribute only on search pages
    • Hybrid: Distribute ad groups on both search pages and content pages

Content Ads and Search Ads may be syndicated to the same partner sites.

    • Search syndication ads are triggered by a keyword search on the partner site and served similarly to ads on Bing.com. You can reach the partner audience through your existing search campaigns.
    • Content syndication ads can be triggered in two ways:
      • Through keywords that are crawled on a publisher's page and identified as being highly relevant.
      • Through site targeting, which allows you to forgo the use of keywords and instead select and bid on participating publisher sites.
        • Keyword and site bids are thrown together into the auction mix to determine the placement of ads on each site.

    Microsoft Content Network

Microsoft Advertising works with the web's top publishers to help you significantly extend your reach through Content Ads. Our high-quality Content Network in the U.S. includes Microsoft-owned and operated sites, like Bing Travel, Hotmail, MSN pages, and the Windows File Association page; Yahoo!-owned sites; and participating partner sites like those on the NBC Universal Digital Network.

Here are just a few of the sites where your Content Ads could display:

    • MSN webpages, including Health and Fitness, Money, and Travel (U.S. and Canada)
    • Yahoo! webpages, including Finance, Movies, Mail, and Groups (U.S.)
    • NBC Universal, including NBC.com and Bravotv.com (U.S.)
    • ABC.com
    • Advance Internet Network, including NewJersey.com and Oregon Live
    • Newspaper Consortium, including the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Sun Times (U.S.)

Take advantage of our high-performance network

Your ads display on quality sites, and they can reach more of your desired audience as they browse their favorite topics online. Content Ads offer the same targeting options as your search campaigns, plus these distribution features help you reach the right users:

    • Site Targeting: Enhance the return on your advertising spend with key features like geographic and demographic targeting that leverages valuable user data. Some publishers allow you to target their websites, which means you can forgo the use of keywords and instead place bids on whole sites. You can then use the Placement Performance Report in adCenter to see performance metrics for those site-targeted ad groups. Most Microsoft-owned websites are not currently available for site targeting, but you can use this feature for MSN Hotmail.
    • Site bidding and website exclusion: Control where your ads appear in order to focus your campaign on the sites whose audience best matches your customer profile. Bid on certain sites or exclude Content Ads from displaying on certain sites throughout the Microsoft Content Ads Network. Enter up to 500 domain URLs for the sites you do not wish your ads to display on.
