Sanity Check: adCenter Distribution Settings and Draft Status

Sanity Check: adCenter Distribution Settings and Draft Status

  • Comments 1

When you create and upload your search campaigns you want to be sure that your ads appear as soon as possible, to help with this there are several checks that you can do before uploading content. These simple checks will ensure your ads appear correctly first time so you can start getting traffic to your site with right away.

Distribution Settings

There are several different ways of controlling who sees your ads. You can select which country, language and on which sites your ad will be visible on:

Setting

Purpose

Language and market

The language and market setting controls which Bing market your ad serves on. For example the setting English – United Kingdom will mean your ads will display on Bing.co.uk whereas ad groups set to English – United States will appear on Bing.com

Language and market is set at ad group level and can be edited from the “change settings” menu in the adCenter web UI, or the editor pane in adCenter Desktop.

The language and market setting however does not mean that your ad will not appear outside of that country. Whilst the majority of users will use their local Bing domain they don’t always. If you want to ensure that users outside of a particular country cannot view your ad you should use Location targeting as described below.

Location targeting

Location targeting looks at the IP address of the user and allows you to limit your ads to a specific country or geographical area using this information. This setting is made at campaign or ad group level and can be set in the adCenter UI or desktop tool.

Distribution settings

Distribution settings control which sites your ad will appear on. In selected markets ads can be displayed on Bing, Yahoo and search partners including the content network (US only). In other markets this setting is not applicable and your ad will only be displayed on Bing.

This setting is made at ad group level and can be made in the adCenter UI and desktop tool.

Top Tip

It is important to ensure that Language and Market settings and location targeting settings are the same, for example a language and market setting of US – English and Spanish combined with a location setting of United Kingdom will result in your ads not displaying.

Draft Status

Another quick check when creating a new campaign is to ensure that all ad groups contain both keywords and ads. If an ad group contains one without the other it will be highlighted as “draft status” as shown below. Any ad group in draft status will not display, and it is therefore important to ensure that all ad groups contain both keywords and ads.

Summary

These two checks are a great way of ensuring that you get your ads online quickly and easily. Next week we will look at how you can avoid ads not appearing due to negative keyword conflicts. In the meantime if you have any questions on distribution settings or draft statuses please leave us a comment.
