Marketing to Canada? Double Check Your Distribution!

Marketing to Canada? Double Check Your Distribution!

  • Comments 11

In my first ever blog as the Search Evangelist for Microsoft Canada, I thought what better topic to write about than something that I hold near and dear to my heart: Canadians – specifically, Canadian eyeballs!  Okay, a bit more specifically, I’m talking about your adCenter campaigns targeted to us Canucks.

Something that has been an eye-opener for me over the past 6 years spent working with Canadian agencies and advertisers is that some of them were unknowingly missing out on significant Canadian search volume.  What I discovered was that many of these agencies and advertisers, from market-leading brands to small businesses, had setup their campaigns to run on adCenter’s US distribution.  Even though they were geo-targeting users in Canada, their ads didn’t display on Canadian sites like Bing.ca!   They potentially missed out on 15 million unique searchers using Microsoft and Yahoo! sites (including Yahoo! Search, Bing, and partners) that drive approximately 284 million monthly searches in Canada.1

If you’re marketing to Canadians, make sure you maximize your potential in capturing the most customers by following these steps:

1.     Sign in and click the Campaigns tab,

2.     Click into a Campaign

3.     Click into an Ad Group

4.     Click the “Change Settings” link for the Ad Group

5.     Look at “Distribution language and country/region:” If it reads, English – Canada or French – Canada,  then great job and stay tuned for my next blog on driving ridiculous volume regardless of industry by inserting keywords like “Lady Gaga”...  Kidding!  If it says US, UK or France, then continue  to Step 6

6.     If you’d like to duplicate an existing campaign for distribution in Canada, check the box next to that campaign and choose Export to Excel from the More menu.

7.     Or, to create a new campaign from scratch, simply click Create Campaign.

8.     After saving the new campaign click Create ad group.

9.     Under Ad Group Settings:

a.     Select the Copy an Existing Ad Group box.

b.     Select an ad group to copy.

c.     Check the Copy all ads and Copy all keywords checkboxes to the right of your ad group list.

10.   Create an ad group name that specifies the Canadian market.

11.   Under the Distribute your ads by language and market field, click the drop-down menu and select the English - Canada market.

9.     Edit your ads and verify that they are written as you would like them to appear to the Canadian market.

10.   Verify, edit or add any keywords that would be relevant to the Canadian market.

I hope you found my first blog insightful and handy!  You can follow me on twitter: @le_chau or stay tuned to the Microsoft adCenter Community site as I will be posting new tips and tricks over the coming weeks!

  • I followed the steps but there is no option for 'Distribution language and country/region'.

  • There is no drop down menu for language and market....

  • Couldn't get past step 5. I've been using PPC since the days of Overture and couldn't figure this out from your instructions. Maybe you'd get more Canadian advertising revenue if your UI wasn't so confusing... even for experienced PPC advertisers.

  • I also am not sure how this is set up. First of all, I wouldn't want to copy the adgroup, but I would like it to be distributes to both countries.

I now has this set up as follows:

Distribution language and country/region: English and Spanish - United States

Target customers by location   Click to view help.

Display my ads only in selected locations

    [Australia (country/region); Austria (country/region); Belgium (country/region); Canada (country/region); .... And so on.

Isn't this the correct way to set it up if I want the adgroup to target all those countries?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • Why Adcenter alway made thing hard.  I can imagine 10 better way to implement this -*-.

Seriously, this is 1 of the major factor why Adcenter hard to fight with competitor.    Can't believe it's Microsoft products who alway best on usability.

  • I would suggest to add an Edit button to the Distribution language and country/region section. This will make our life easier. Specially for the campigns created with Microsoft Ad Center. We have no option to do this from Editor or online.

    Thanks.

  • I tried to set up an account to advertise our guitars to Canadians only to find out you don't support Mac and Safari. Not to put to fine a point on it but that struck me as completely bone headed.

  • I have been doing PPC since they began. I have had 8 people from Ad Center US/Canada helping and they have been very cooperative. However the way you say to set up Canada Ads does not work and they can't explain why my ads are not showing up under Canada.
