Valentine's Day 2011 for PPC Marketers: ‘Tis the Season to Love

  • Comments 1

Starting this week, everywhere you look there will be red roses, heart shaped candies, and bright pink greeting cards telling you Valentine’s Day is upon us. Whether you consider V-day the most romantic day of the year or just a "Hallmark Holiday" generated day to spend money, the fact is Valentine’s Day is the 4th largest retail holiday of the year.  With more than $14 billion+ in spending anticipated, it presents tons of opportunity for Microsoft Advertising adCenter advertisers.

Remember these key items to help your account perform ideally:

·     Make your ad copy relevant – if someone is seeking a gift for their loved one, an ad with “valentine’s day” in it is most likely to win out. So refresh your ad copy to include this term or other related V-day terms to capture the searcher’s attention. clip_image002[5]

·     Expand you keyword list - I know I’m going to sound like a broken recor,d but expanding your keyword list is a crucial aspect in taking advantage of the seasonal opportunity. Utilize this keyword list to identify potentially related keywords to your business and Valentine’s Day. Add holiday specific terms ASAP as the traffic is starting to jump already.

o  Tip: If the keyword list does not provide keywords relevant to your business, take a look at what’s hot this Valentine’s Day and see how you can relate to it. Check out this TODAY show page that has a number of articles and feature stories on  popular V-day items this year.

·     Ensure you bid on Phrase match – last year we saw the majority of traffic and clicks on Valentine’s Day terms come from Phrase match. Even better news, Phrase match had the lowest CPCs of the three match types during that time. More traffic, less expensive… there is no good reason you shouldn’t be bidding on Phrase match, so double check that you are.

·     Watch your position – approximately 82% of clicks on Valentine’s Day terms came from the top 4 positions last year*. With increased competition during the V-day holiday spike, your position could drop. Monitor your performance more frequently over the next few weeks, if your position drops, increase bids to stay competitive and drive traffic to your site.

Valentine’s Day season is officially underway. You have the next two weeks to really take advantage of it. Optimize your account’s performance using the techniques above and review the Valentine’s Day Insights sheet today to get set up for success.

And Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you get the flowers, chocolate, and/or search traffic you’re looking for. :)
