Why should you use advanced ad units?
No one is ever going to say advanced ad units should be used by everyone, but everyone should consider them. Advanced ad units give you the ability for increased customization of your ad units and allow you to choose from several ready-made eye-catching designs, which are great! But did you know that advanced ad units typically outperform simple ad units.
How do you set up advanced ad units?
Setting up an advanced ad unit is simple; obviously a little more difficult than a simple ad unit, but still pretty simple.
Log into your account and navigate to Setup—Ad units—Create content ad unit—Step 1. Ad type.
Move to Step 2. Colors and Fonts—choose your ad style; select a visual template and customize the Text, Background, Effects and Border.
Text
Unlike simple ads, here you have the ability to modify individual text components, such as title, description, display URL and sponsored link. Now simple ads, they give you the option to only modify text color.
Background
The background feature is a really cool component of advanced ads. If you are looking to make your ads blend into your page or if you want to create a gradient appearance to your background color, you can accomplish both here. An effective background can really help make your ad unit standout to your visitors.
Effects
Add a drop shadow to your ads and see how they gain a bit of a 3-D look. Does this addition give you better performance? Run a test letting your visitors give you the answer.
Border
Add the final touch to your ad unit. Change the thickness and color of the border enabling it to blend seamlessly into the rest of your site. Try rounding the corners to improve how you ad unit blends with the rest of your page.
Move to Step 3. Ad Unit Code—be sure to properly insert your ad unit code on your page for your ad unit to appear.
Note: it is optional to check the box Include all the appearance settings in the code. Checking or not checking the box will not impact how the ad unit is displayed.
