OK so the photo isn’t of an iceberg!
It’s actually a glacier. A glacier in the Þórsmörk valley in Iceland.
Last week I was lucky enough to be asked to speak at the Reykjavik Internet Marketing Conference by Kristjan Mar Hauksson from Nordic eMarketing
On a panel with Sion Portman from Nike I talked about the online habits of youths aged 18-24, and explained to the gathered how internet marketing and specifically demographic reporting and targeting can greatly enhance the data needed to make the right decisions on where and how to spend their marketing kronur!
The thing that got me was that 200 Icelanders had turned up to hear about online advertising, search engine optimisation and social media, and there are only 300k in the population. Really, who would have thought?
Then I was reminded of the Dixon Jones podcast where he said he got into online marketing through analysing his query logs a realising people in Ohio were finding his website on murder mystery games. It was because there was a new audience out there that he never knew existed that he decided re-market his site accordingly.
Currently folks from 131 countries find and read this blog including people in Iceland.
Just goes to show that when you dig a little deeper with analytics, the audience you think you’re targeting may turn out not to exactly what you think it is. But when you know, you can take action and start tailoring your content to take advantage of your new found insight.
