Preview Bing: the new search experience from Microsoft

posted Mon, Jun 01 2009

Last week, the Microsoft search team announced plans for a new search service called Bing. Starting today, searchers around the world can try out a preview of the new experience at www.bing.com and on June 3rd, it will be fully deployed for everyone.

What is Bing, anyway?

Bing is a decision engine that offers consumers a way to make faster, more informed decisions. From shopping and travel to health, local and more, Bing delivers great results in a rich, well-organized experience to help consumers easily accomplish key tasks. Find out more about the Bing consumer experience on the Behind Bing site, or follow us on Twitter (@bing).

What does Bing mean for Advertisers?

Microsoft has consistently provided a high quality, highly converting search user base, and we intend to continue to deliver in this area. By putting an emphasis on relevance, Bing delivers an opportunity for you to reach out to consumers at the right time in the purchase decision cycle to drive conversions. We’ve been testing Bing internally for a while now, and, have to say – it’s cool. How cool? Check it out for yourself at www.bing.com and find out.

First off.. I like the sound of it.. Bing! - its like the "Sound of Found"

Second .. I hope Bing really kicks off big time.. I am a complete Microsoft freak.. And hate to see "Google eating up all the search and advertisement revenues"

Third.. I really hope your search algorithms are better.. many of the sites I had hoped dont show up on bing - they do on google and yahoo.. You guys need to revv it up a bit..

There are some errors we have observed on a couple of browsers... whom do we report to? do you have any beta testing regustration?

I hope Bing is successful since the current MSN/Live Search Engines contribute very little to the success of my online advertising (5%). The only way it has a chance is if Microsoft is willing to spend lots of money to get the word out...just like we do. I'll be watching.

Why does MSN Ad Center marketing produce clicks but not conversions (filled out forms)?

    Will Bing help?

    I liked wha I saw...

But, when will ad-center be available in Brazil?

    Isn't Brazil a good marketplace?

I don't see as many sponsored listings, is this the case? can PPC advertisers expect lower volume? The tests I have run since launch don't show sponsored listings on every result?

We already advertise with micosoft,do we need to do the same with bing?

I just used search at the MSN home page and it went straight to Bing so I think the deployment is there for many people already. Are you rolling it out by regions?

I wish you success with Bing and looking forward to getting value for money for my advertising dollars.

Nice but nothing I've read shows how this might be put to use - in practical terms.

Can you compare system with competitors engine?

  • Tue, Jun 02 2009 11:45AM

I have noticed (a clients') ads that were showing in top position last week are not even showing at all! On the other hand, that same client is now pulling #1 position for organic results for the same keyword, where they were not previously.  Is this not strange?

Anytime a search engine (or any software) overwrites default choices ALREADY made by users, it feeds the ongoing fear that Microsoft is, once again, overstepping it's bounds.  The worst problem is that there is NO accountability for this action. Who put this 'feature' in? Who is responsible for allowing it to stay in? Why aren't they on the carpet for doing so? How do we communicate with them to tell them how enraged we are?

Fight this. Fight for your user experience the way YOU want it. Don't settle.

I HATE BING WITH A PASSION. Why on earth would I want a search engine that provides confusing information that sends me in a million different directions. Case in point, today I was reading an article about the American Idols and where are they now? Each page provided a picture and information about the idols, but while reading it, it was like playing fill in the blank.

Example: Hung became a cult hero with his rendition of this Ricky Martin hit. This was the result. He's made several albums, his fan site had millions of hits and he ended up in a foreign flick. If you really want to see more, search for this.

Why not just fill in the information for me instead of giving me a link to a Bing search page with a million other sites to choose from?

Bing is a waste of time and I will always use Google.

    Hi hmcd2008,

I'm sorry to hear that your satisfaction with Bing is less than ideal. We appreciate your feedback and example of what you would like to see changed, and I've shared this with the Bing Team. Thanks again for your feedback.
