Day 1 Recap – Search Engine Strategies – New York

posted Wed, Mar 25 2009

Hello everyone from SES NY!

Jason Yormark, Mel Carson, and I are attending sessions and meeting with search marketing experts, and adCenter customers. We’ll be providing updates on sessions we know you’ll find valuable, video tips from the experts and session attendees, and ongoing updates via Twitter.

Before you dive into our post – see what the speakers of SES are saying about how search marketing can build your brand, what the most important things new marketers should consider, and why use Live Search in our Fun Day One SES NY Recap Video.

Day one, Guy Kawasaki presented on Twitter – how best to use the tool and the gains you can have as a marketer by using twitter. Mel covered Kawasaki’s session on Twitter.

Then in the afternoon we attended a session with three industry experts Susan Prater, Dave Naylor, and Jen Slegg. The three addressed search and search marketing 101.

Susan Prater, global digital marketing manager at Owens Corning, top tip for new search marketers is to look beyond your Web site and outreach to other site owners to get inbound links to bring traffic and also to potentially raise your organic placement in search, but to remember with this that quality trumps quantity here.

Dave Naylor, from search marketing agency – Bronco - in the UK stressed site structure as something that should be a focus for new search marketers. He has multiple solutions for this on his site – but the idea he stressed was to build your site as if the person coming cannot see any of the graphics, layout, etc. if they were just being read the text on the page – would they know what your site is about in 30 seconds. He also stressed writing clear and concise content that uses the same keywords you are using in our search marketing campaigns.

Jen Slegg, who runs the contextual advertising blog - JenSense.com - stressed setting a budget for your campaigns and to leverage content networks and keyword tools. Her two closing takeaways were ensure that the page that you are linking to from your ad is exactly what the advertiser is expecting and always give visitors what they expect to find.
