Now Available for Qualified Advertisers: Microsoft adCenter Desktop (Beta)

posted Mon, Feb 16 2009

If you are a U.S. or Canadian advertiser with fewer than 100,000 keywords in your combined adCenter accounts, the next time you sign in, you may notice a “What’s New” banner that contains an invitation for you to download the Microsoft adCenter Desktop (Beta).

If you’re unfamiliar with adCenter Desktop, it’s an offline tool that enables seamless integration with adCenter online; you download your campaigns to work on them and then upload new changes or additions to your adCenter account at your convenience. Whether you want to perform bulk edits, monitor performance data or research keywords, this free, easy-to-use new tool may be just what you're looking for.

Building on the convenient and intuitive "Ribbon" user interface of Microsoft Office, the adCenter Desktop lets you perform different functions through a set of tabs that group similar functions together.

Home Tab:

HomeTab

The Home tab is where you can perform some of the most basic tasks, such as importing, exporting, downloading, uploading and previewing changes.

Manage Tab:

ManageTab

As its name suggests, the Manage tab is where you'll be able to manage your account; you can create new campaigns, ad groups, ads and keywords.  You can also migrate negative keywords to different levels in the campaign heirarchy and perform time-saving editorial checks before uploading to adCenter.

Research Tab:

ResearchTab

Keyword research and expansion is a snap with the adCenter Desktop Tool.  From discovering new keywords based on an entered keyword or web address to displaying the estimated average bid amount for your selected terms to reviewing the search query percentage by age and/or gender, there's plenty of data for you to dig into when it comes time to optimize your campaigns.

The Dashboard:

NOTE: There is no data in the above screen shot for confidentiality reasons, this is just to show you what it looks like.

The Dashboard houses gadgets that show your favorites, any alerts that you've set up, and offers visual overviews of campaign performance in bar charts and pie charts.

For more detailed information, visit the Learning Center where you can check out the adCenter DesktopBeta FAQs, read the feature guide and watch video tutorials on campaign creation, campaign management and tips and tricks for using this powerful new tool. You can also take a look at the adCenter DesktopBeta Help.

If you’re in the UK or France, we’re in the final stages of wrapping up the details for your markets’ beta release; there will be an announcement like this one within the next few weeks, so stay tuned for updates as they become available. If you haven’t already done so, you can keep up with notifications of new posts by becoming a fan on our Facebook Page or by following us on Twitter.

For advertisers with keyword totals that exceed the 100,000 limit, please be advised that we are actively working to accommodate your needs and look forward to your participation in the not-too-distant future (we’re hoping for summer 2009).

If you've already been using the adCenter Desktop, we'd love to hear your thoughts on it.  Does it do everything you need it to do?  If not, what improvements would you like to see in future releases?  We're always on the lookout for feedback from our customers, so feel free to post your comments here or over on our forums.

Can you use adCenter's username/password on adCenter Desktop?

This looks great! I can't wait to log into my account and try it out.

Is there any plan whatsoever to provide Mac support?  Just wondering if it's on the roadmap at all, it very well may already be.  Just wanted to throw that out there as the platform has a higher market share in the agency and ad/marketing industry in general than seen in the global populace and it would make sense.

i think you can use the same user name and password for adsense desktop.

    To Meryle and Ajay:

Yes, you can use the same Uername/Password in the desktop tool as you use to sign in to the adCenter web interface.

Hi guys! I've just tried to install the app on my computer (XP). I downloaded a first file from the adCenter interface (setup.exe), which in turn launched another file download (Microsoft.adCenter.Editor.application), and then I got the following message:

"Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance."

So here I am, contacting you for assistance...

You can contact me at contact@ my domain name.

    Thanks.

    Francois

    Jared

I meet the minimum requirements of less than 100,000 keywords but I don't see an invitation to try the beta?

    Why would that be?

Hi Jared - Are you in the US or Canada? If you let the team know here: adcentercommunity.com/.../15.aspx they'll troubleshoot for you. Cheers Mel

    Hi Microsoft AdCenter Desktop support,

I've been trying to download AdCenter Desktop but I'm repeatedly getting this eror message:

The following error occurred attempting to install 'maf.adcenter.microsoft.com/.../Microsoft.adCenter.Editor.application':

"No application is associated with the specified file for this operation. "

The following components were successfully installed:

    - Microsoft adCenter Desktop

See the setup log file located at 'C:\Users\v-alexma\AppData\Local\Temp\VSD2BBA.tmp\install.log' for more information.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Alex,

Some users experience this issue when they are attempting to download the desktop tool through FireFox. to correcly download the tool through FireFox, you will need to install the FFClickOnce. Here is the URL for the plugin: addons.mozilla.org/.../1608

Further information, the adCenter Desktop requires that you have .NET Framework 3.0 installed and administrater rights to the PC. Also, please ensure that you are using a 32bit install of Vista, if you are using the 64bit version the desktop tool will not work for you.

Hope this information helps you out,

    Thank you,

    Brian H - MSFT

It seems everyone is having the same issues as me,

I see you deliberately avoided the "will it be available on a mac" question.

So, ... let me ask it again:  Is there a version of adCenter Desktop for Mac in the works..?

    Nicholas Trueman

    Hi Mel,

    Hope you're well mate!

I too would like the tool on Mac as my entire team use macs here and we are not pushing Adcenter as we are not prepared to spend hours transfering our Google accounts and information to a PC to use the desktop tool. I feel it would benefit you guys to convert it to mac as more and more people are buying mac machines - you're missing out on more business here!

We only focus on Google and Yahoo as the tools are avalible to us on mac machines.

    Thanks,

    Nick.
