Xbox LIVE: The Largest Social Network on TV

posted Wed, Nov 18 2009

Earlier this week, AdAge ran a story about social TV.  It's an interesting piece that focuses on how producers and advertisers are trying to get the audience to engage, by not just watching but also talking about what they see. First Network, Then Cable, Now There's 'Social TV' (AdAge). In my opinion, that's only one part of the social TV revolution.  The other - and equally large part of the picture is - Xbox LIVE.

Xbox LIVE is the largest social network on TV and yesterday, Xbox LIVE added even more social networking muscle. Millions of Xbox LIVE customers downloaded the latest update to LIVE, which brought Facebook and Twitter to Xbox 360 consoles around the world. This integration opens the door for Xbox LIVE to become the largest social network in the world!

Since the launch of Xbox LIVE over 300 million friendship connections have been made on Xbox LIVE and more than six million personal messages are sent between Xbox LIVE members every day.  As you can imagine, those numbers are expected to grow dramatically now that you can link friends' lists and tweet about your latest achievements.

To us and to many of our advertising partners, Xbox LIVE has evolved into a mature media channel that is so much more than gaming. Our 20 million subscriber base rivals that of many cable providers and the media choices we offer go far beyond gaming with more than 30 thousand pieces of content, including movies and TV shows that can be downloaded instantly in 1080p HD and 5.1 surround sound. It's social TV. It's Connected Entertainment.

Many of our advertisers recognize this and are taking advantage of the opportunity to produce branded destination experiences, microsites from which viewers can download and interact with content.  Content viewers can tweet about without having to turn on a PC or leave the comfort of their couch.

So if you are an advertiser, looking to take advantage of social TV, I urge you to take a look at Xbox LIVE and see what all the tweeting is about.

Thanks,

Ginny

Good piece, Ginny. It is indeed a very important part of the Social TV revolution. Social TV remains in its infancy and it is hoped that Microsoft will help set the bar for the converged medium.
