adCenter Analytics Beta To Close

posted Thu, Mar 12 2009

The Microsoft adCenter AnalyticsBeta team announced today the end of the adCenter Analytics beta program.

The beta has been closed, but the program will remain available to current users through December 31, 2009.

Please note that all hosted services, data collection, and technical support will end at that time. If you would like to save your historical data, please use the export feature to download your reports before December 31, 2009.

Our team would like to sincerely thank you for your participation and your invaluable contributions to the program. Our objectives at the outset were to serve the needs of small and midsize self-service customers, as well as evolve the Microsoft strategy to address the Web analytics space.

The insights you’ve contributed through your feedback and your use of the tool have served an invaluable purpose in shaping Microsoft’s future in this space. You’ve helped us work towards making an informed decision about building a general Web analytics solution, and despite the end of life plan, the beta was very much a success.

It enabled us to confidently determine that we can be of most value to advertisers and publishers by offering a tailored solution that meets more specialized needs.

Email support will remain available until December 31, 2009. We recommend that you use the coming months to evaluate your Web analytics needs and leverage that information to conduct a search for an alternative Web analytics solution.

For a list of companies offering alternative solutions, please see below.

We hope you’ll continue to read posts on the adCenter Analytics Blog which will be renamed “Insights & Analysis” in the coming weeks. The blog will remain focused on research and best practice, helping online marketers navigate to better ROI and more efficient marketing optimization.

Again, thank you for your participation. We appreciate your contribution.

Cheers

Mel

forgot, www.blvdstatus.com a live analytics solution that is free.

Honestly I was hoping you guys would hold out and and make some waves in the analytics space as it is getting smaller and smaller, but I also understand shutting something down when you feel you don't have the potential to be #1 especially when those resources can be used to be #1 elsewhere.

  • Thu, Mar 12 2009 12:46PM

    Thanks for your understanding Chris!

Sad to hear that you'll shut down analytics. It was a great tool.

Does that mean you will soon stop the adcenter beta publisher program as well - I am just thinking that an own analytics solution would be beneficial for publishers who earn with the publisher program. Who wants to be a publisher and have its statitics run by Google? I would be interested in seeing a counter weight to Google one day.

    Any opinion?Frank

I assume no analytics product will be offered from MS at this time then?  Paid or Free?

So much for those of us that came from the Deep Metrix - Live Stats purchase a few years back.

You should add Microsoft Commerce Server 2007/2009 to the list of web analytics vedors as the product includes Data Warehouse and Reporting features that can be used not only by Commerce Server e-commerce sites but also by standard web sites.

  • Thu, Mar 12 2009 01:08PM

Frank - Thanks for the feedback. Publisher is NOT closing and is very much part of Microsoft Advertising's ongoing strategy in this space.

Brett - Not at this time I'm afraid. We hope by giving you enough notice and by providing you with a comprehensive list of alternatives you'll be able to settle on a supplier that best suits your needs.

I hope you can take some constructive criticism. It is frustrating that a giant like Microsoft killed one of, if not the best analytics programs available, that being DeepMetrix. After three or so years in Microsoft's hands the program still didn't have some of the best features that DeepMetrix had many years ago. DeepMetrix analytics from 4+ years ago is better than what we have now with Microsoft. I never could figure this out. From the outside it sure looks like Microsoft is caught up in the procedures, politics and testing etc unlike one of the other "G"iants out there that quickly adjusts and gets it done. I think this clip on YouTube sums up what it looks like is happening inside Microsoft to those of us on the outside.

I really liked this tool, i couldn't understand why microsoft did this. I hope later we ll see this tool again.

  • Thu, Mar 12 2009 04:06PM

This is awful news. I'm so sad to hear this as I was really enjoying MS Analytics. Is Microsoft totally pulling the plug on this or are they going to offer a different solution. Isn't it paramount to offer an analytics solution if you would like to get a grip on online advertising like Google has?

  • Thu, Mar 12 2009 04:09PM

I always felt bad for DeepMetrix - LiveStats. It was a great product and I am sure there are many many people still missing it. If Microsoft decide not to go continue their Analytic efforts then probably they should re-release DeepMetrix - LiveStats as it is.

I agree with Zhoog and that is what I meant in my initial comment: an analytics tool is absolutely necessary when being a publisher. And Google is the best example: provide everything out of one hand is perfect.

We are running several tourism websites and generate income from google adsense. We would like to see a statistic tool that integrates with the MS publisher program where we see us in the future as well.

We advertise with MS as well.

Hoping that MS's publisher program (like AdSense from Google) will make it to production status and we are feeling sorry that we will have to use a 3rd party (Google) analysis tool. I am aware that  there are several others out but let's keep it simple: Google is the market leder here and easy to use for everyone of us.

Another thought: we are a multimedia agency and are currently providing our clients the Google analytics statistics - however, we WERE really hoping that we could switch soon to MS Analytics but it seems that we have to keep Google around.

    Regards

    have a nice evening folks,

    Frank

Thanks for the comment Frank. I encourage you to sign up for the pubCenter beta program for US publishers. The beta discussions among early testers covered some of the questions you raised. The beta is still in a limited, private stage but you can apply for an account here: advertising.microsoft.com/publisher

Well, not a surprise really, MS getting beat at their own game of software again so pulling more products off the shelves.

Maybe if they spent less time releasing buggy and bloated software, and more time listening to their customers then they would'nt make decisions like this.

Chock up another notch for the big G!

Sorry MS, but you really don't make it hard for them do you? Is there even one area of online you are beating them in?

  • Fri, Mar 13 2009 05:49AM

Thats a sad day but i suspect Microsoft will come back as they are not one to giveup. I have been looking around recently at other interesting companies in this space and i have recently been introduced to a new product called Intellitracker that i've been blown away by. Also worth checking out the new tools by Site Intelligence and Foviance who are not another Google clone and actually go one step further and provide seriously customisable business reporting which is what companies are starting to need. We are looking at behavioural targeting for our email and and real time optimisation which several of these companies are now moving into.

  • Fri, Mar 13 2009 07:00AM

Sad. I hoped Microsoft would step up to the challange. But maybe they are just rethinking the approach, there are still a lot of questions out there which need the right tool.

  • Fri, Mar 13 2009 10:43AM

Will this in any way affect the accuracy of data in adCentre Labs at some point in the future. Or was analytics data never used in the compilation of this?

  • Fri, Mar 13 2009 10:59AM

    Don't forget SmarterStats

I hope that this does not come off as too self-serving, but can you add our Web log analytics Product SmarterStats to the above list?

    www.smartertools.com/.../Web-Log-Analytics-Website-Statistics.aspx

We have been providing statistic to Web Hosting companies and small business for several years and are a dedicated Microsoft shop.  Thoughts?

Mel, Sorry to hear this is going away as well. The reporting was far superior to Google's Analytics and the interface although a bit more complicated was one of Microsoft's better efforts.

My main concern is that from all the conversations I have had with MS the message was their data was king and they were going to leverage it fully to beat Google.  Dropping your analytics program suggests you have

moved away from a major portion of that strategy.

    So whats next?

Microsoft has come to an agreement to purchase part or all of Yahoo and will be using their analytics toolkit?

Microsoft will rerelease this in another form as a paid for version.

    Prediction:

Google will go to a paid version - Just as their checkout service is no longer free for advertisers.

  • Fri, Mar 13 2009 12:23PM

I use Clicky Web Analytics on my blog.  They are always coming out with something new.  http://getclicky.com

  • Sat, Mar 14 2009 02:40AM

We have integrated GetClicky into our platform SEOintelligence.com...I'm sad to see Gatuneau close, there are many other solutions out there and MS should focus on more AdCenter Bid/Copy testing/optimization and usability for the customers. That's my two cents...

Could you add to the list Atmosphere from Predicta.

  • Mon, Mar 16 2009 03:40PM

    Hi Mel,

I was wondering if you could add SiteCensus to your listing of Website Analytic alternatives.  SiteCensus is owned by the Nielsen Company and tracks not standard Website Analytics, but also provides Stream Tracking and Demographic information for our customers through the use of a client-side tagging solution.  Text from our site follows: "SiteCensus is a browser-based audience measurement tool that provides in-depth tracking and analysis of your Web site users, site performance and other critical measurement data. Examine your site performance, usage trends, content and product placement, visitor loyalty, search engine performance and visitor behavior. Analysis is delivered via concisely constructed reporting modules so that each important process can be researched independently and benchmarked internally."  Potential Customers can send inquires for more information to careusa@nielsen.com for more information.

    Thank you,

I was actually hoping for Microsoft to come up with a better analytic tool, something that can outperform Google Analytics and thought that was in the works with Microsoft Adcenter Analytics.

I wonder how many beta users it had? Most will flock to Google Analytics which if you haven't used yet, it really is just so complete and gives you pretty much the information you need.

I'm still hoping for Microsoft to come out with a competing analytics tool to Microsoft as they have done with BING =)

Professional SEO's who utilize web analytics prefer newer commercial analytics solutions like mviSPY over Google Analytics. Google free price tag is attractive but is a flawed program and not used by serious SEO's.

MAPILab Statistics for SharePoint is another analytics solution. It can be useful for your SharePoint projects: more 40 customizable interactive reports about SharePoint internal/external portals, great features like full integration with MOSS/WSS/AD, simple implementation and excellent cost. www.mapilab.com/.../statistics

With the new merger in place, what are the odds that Yahoo/MS or Adcenter will get this back into beta? I know that the relative data underlying the actual use of a tracking tool far outweighs the inventive nature of how the tool actually works.  Google gives us what we need, not what we want... But they derive massive amounts of cross collateralized data and analysis across every single Google Analytics coded site... How much valuable data is being passed up by Yahoo/MSFT that can dig in to demographic and relational data for tracking behaviors - thusly applied to their paid search and analytical data coffers? "Serious SEO's" would understand the method behind the madness. They don't care what *WE* can get out of the tool, as long as it is free and functions at 80% of usefulness... They want the tracking - pure and simple.

I am using Google Analytics for a quite long time and I am also getting the good results with that. So, I don't have much idea about Microsoft's Analytics. But, as it is also a very large company, so, I think, it is worth giving a try to this also.

  • Fri, Jun 25 2010 02:28PM

I was hoping Microsoft came out with a better tool similar to google analytics. It works pretty good, but still has some issues of course. Perhaps they can come out with a complete analytics tool then maybe bing would be in some sort of competitive space with google.
